One Step From Freedom
(A Poem-Prose written by Martin Eden 30August-1September2008)

A dull roar at the back of the throat of the vanquished
Says what can’t be said in the face of the tyrant ever present
And the halo slips from the religious zealot as you are led away
You had only sought help, refuge, from those who would steal your very soul

They give your belt and shoes back, and a shove
As you walk from the cell from which you cursed their unborn
To protect yourself from the informant they’d sent in, and to comfort the woman in the cell next door
Then the street unknown and a cab they eventually enlisted, where the money ran out well short of home

BEIJING OLYMPICS
‘One World One Dream’

Some Facts:

1. of 304 participating countries, just 87 won at least one medal of any colour;

2. countries which didn’t win at least one medal of any colour did not rate a mention from the point of view of a country profile/information or in result reporting on the official olympic internet site;

3. countries were ranked by the number of gold, then silver, then bronze medals won, and alternatively in terms of total medals won, so the biggest and richest naturally featured toward the top … a fairer ‘one world one dream’ ranking would weight the medals – first gold, then silver, then bronze – per head of population then per capita annual income;

4. michael phelps did not attend the closing ceremony due to being in london fulfilling a ‘contractual’ obligation … whatever happened to the ‘amateur & friendship spirit’ in olympic sport? … i wonder how his usa team mates felt, particularly those who participated in his ‘relay’ golds?

5. this was the last time softball was contested at an olympics as it has been dropped as an olympic sport/event by the ioc in their wisdom effective from the next games (to be held in london in 2012) while boxing and martial arts continue to be retained!??! … er … what was that? … something about friendly games??

The Dreaming
(A Poem-Prose written by Martin Eden 24&25 August 2008)

There is a time
There is a place
A changing
An ending of a beginning

There is a sense of not wanting to let go
Of growing emptiness, unwanted
Yet there is celebration
In growing renewal

There is a folding into memory
And a pause full of unknown
Then an unfolding uncertainty
Of a new flower

While a seed of familiarity
Dances in the distance
To the tune of a new song
Born of an old

A passion envelopes a greater picture
Draws it to its bussom as love
A light is kindled within
And life is momentarily explained

Emphatica
(A Poem-Prose Written by Martin Eden on 19 August 2008)

What competition reigns in dismal days
But Olympics between nations
In one world one dream
That search for the dollar sign
In each and every event

Who’s lost the amateur status
The one where greed is not needed
Risk doping, risk ethnic ideal
Cover-up political motive
Yet still we get together

What of the losers
What of the countries without medals
The biggest may not be the best
Losing gracefully, the real friend
Let’s holler for that sole Greek marathoner

Mirror Park
(A Poem-Prose written by Martin Eden 27July-2August2008)

Where is that place where pensive lies
It seems so far from home
My war-torn parents went unrecognized
A burden for me to carry around
I should have kept drinking, it kept me numb

You offer me room to grow
You protect my achilles heel
You love me

Time to take care of self properly again
With patience and kindness

Where is that place where pleasures thrive
Those random oases spread through time
To which our common traits give form

My Picture In The Rain
(A Poem-Prose written by Martin Eden 19-21 July 2008)

I await that final bell
Seemingly unable to extricate myself
From that constant revision of my life
With not a whimper from my dreams

I try to separate my night from day
But the darkness prevails
Neither winner or loser
I feel what could have been over what I’ve done

I’ve risked and cared
I’ve fought and run
I’ve tired and rallied
As often as done

Yet I’ve lived well beyond the norm
Done things to integrate and reach the dawn
I’ve seen the light and lost the focus
And came back again for more

It’s time to press beyond what I know
The door has opened and I step in
There is trial and error beyond
And that forgetfulness of life midst creativity

An Invitation To Disharmony
(A Poem-Prose written by Martin Eden 20&21June2008)

The phone, it rings, bringing anticipation
The answering machine clicks in to vet, friend or foe
The caller is family, and messages a grunt to call her
No greeting or how are you, hope this finds you happy and well
Just filling in the time due to self-appointed boredom
Inviting you to share the disharmony of an aged soul
Whose life was spent in abdication

The Strangest Day
(A Poem-Prose written by Martin Eden on 16 June 2008)

I try to fight the strangest day
But it comes without warning to show the way
The thing that’s said
Which causes a frown
The passion unguarded
That’s quietly noted

Rain, rain that soothes yet keeps you inside
With the inactivity affecting the mind
You see the winter
As it rises within you
You long for the summer that was
And dwell in the uncertainty of the next

Yet we all walk that path that says
To hell with it all, let’s rally yet cry
Let’s set out to live
What we’ve not yet tried
Let’s be who we are
Despite the politeness!
