The Nightmare of Updating/Upgrading phpBB!

Post by Avalon »

:!: COMMENT: An unnecessarily involved and extremely drawn out 'In-fact-MANUAL' process!! Previously the 'AUTOMATIC' Update/Upgrade Option never ever completed without a series of errors which overwhelmed even the Technical Specialists or at least one error which couldn't be resolved by either my ISP (Internet Service Provider) or the phpBB Community's Support. I eventually succeeded, after a lot of trial and error, by meticulously putting together disparate advice and following it meticulously, and i mean METICULOUSLY, step by step!!

FIRST UP
:arrow: I logged into my phpBB Community Board i.e. avalonica.edenrealm.com ... then into its ACP (Administration Control Panel) ... there I ensured I was using 'ProSilver' ONLY and 'English(UK)' ONLY ... then via the 'Extensions' tab I disabled my Extensions: Copyright in Footer; Site logo; Sortables Captcha.

DOWNLOADED THE 'AUTOMATIC' phpBB 3.1.9 to 3.2.2 UPDATE/UPGRADE .zip File from phpBB.com
:arrow: To my MacBookPro LapTop Computer's Desktop;
:arrow: Opened it in my FTP Application i.e. Coda;
:arrow: I uploaded the /Install and /Vendor Folders to my /ER-SD-avalonica Folder at my ISP ... there was no problem with the /Install upload ... with the /Vendor Folder I entered into a very long 'watch' and 'click-carefully' process: specifically, whenever a Dialogue Box appears - never click 'Resume', click 'Merge' whenever it appears, otherwise click 'Replace' ... even after this 'Upload Process' completes one still has to wait for the 'Indexing Process' to complete fully, continuing with "whenever a Dialogue Box appears - never click 'Resume', click 'Merge' whenever it appears, otherwise click 'Replace'"

IN YOUR BROWSER, GO TO http://www.yoursite.com/BoardFolder/install/
:arrow: From there I followed the stepped 'Process' to where a list of files appears under a red (X), which have to be deleted, from your phpBB Community Board's Folder/SubFolders ... another painstakingly detailed process as you go seek the files in your FTP (Coda) through Folders/SubFolders to delete each 'specific file' one by one ... then one one 'Updates' to see if there are any more to delete, eventually you arrive at none and you ... then in the next step one has to download an 'Update Archive and open it to your Desktop, and via your FTP (Coda) another long meticulous process of uploading from individual Folders/SubFolders/Files (as necessary) ensues with an ever watchful-eye on "whenever a Dialogue Box appears - never click 'Resume', click 'Merge' whenever it appears, otherwise click 'Replace'" ... EVENTUALLY you arrive at a mySQL timeout error (possibly, dependant on your ISP's capabilities, you may not get this) and the solution is to find and edit your phpBB Community Board's 'config.php' file to then find and edit "mySQL" to "mySQLi" and OK the change/save ... then it's back to your Browser to retry the 'DataBase Update' STEP ... and BINGO the 'INSTALL' process completes and you have, FINALLY, a phpBB3.2.2 Community Board!!!!
