:( If you get a nasty pop-up Dialogue Box containing this message "The InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be installed (0x100000)", then you're in for some 'run-around' with Microsoft, your ISP, your related Software Company, and InstallShield.com - that is, if you haven't already been there!

:? I spent some two weeks ringing people in my very limited network, researching, visiting & learning from Sites such as:
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=q108450
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/14230
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108247
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810608#appliesto
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;814995
http://www.pcbanter.net/archive/index.p ... dquot.html
By now you've got the picture.

 Well after stumbling through all that (I apologise for the Sites not being in any particular order - it reflects the stumbling) the resolution began to dawn on me and I took action on it when the self same thoughts came suggested out loud by a friend as something to “maybe try".

 In some way the visitations to all the above and implementation of 'clearing/reseting' suggested actions prepared the ground for this to work.

 I switched my PC off right through to & including the power switch at the wall. I opened up my CPU Tower and disconnected all 'leads' from the back of my 'DVD-CD Writer' (Drive 'D' in my case). I then switched the PC on and logged in and opened and ran my system so that it registered and accommodated the absence of my 'DVD-CD Writer'. Then I switched it all off again, re-attached the 'leads' in their correct self-same places and re-started my PC up again. This time it reacted with glee at finding a new device, my 'DVD-CD Writer', and happily refreshed all associated facillitators toward a seemingly new installation.

:!: That's it!! The 'cold' cut and re-start worked!! No more nasty infernal kernel problems!! The problem corrected itself. You see I had a full on PC crash precipitated by Microsoft's "Genuine Advantage" and had to reinstall from absolute basics i.e. a CPU Tower Hard Disc re-format. Bottom line is that in the end my 'DVD-CD Writer' needed to be re-started from the same base level as well!! :D :D :D
